The rise of Xiaomi in India has been nothing short of extraordinary. Ever since the company overtook Samsung in the country as the top smartphone manufacturer, it seems it simply can’t stop winning.
As proof of this, some new numbers from Counterpoint Research give us an idea of how major manufacturers in India fare when it comes to online sales. Not only was Xiaomi the market leader in the first quarter of 2019 by a long shot, but six out of the top ten devices in this category are made by the Chinese company.
Check out the chart below to see how Xiaomi’s Indian smartphone shipments via online channels fare as compared to the competition:
Although Samsung gained a little bit of market share in India as compared to Q1 2018 — and Xiaomi lost a little — it’s still not enough to kill Xiaomi’s lead. In fact, Xiaomi is nearly three times as large as Samsung when it comes to online smartphone shipments.
However, the company shouldn’t rest on its laurels. Samsung did gain a bit (likely based on its Galaxy M-series line) and newcomer Realme — an offshoot Oppo brand — gained a significant market share after less than a year in business. Asus also showed some considerable gains as compared to 2018, and high praise for the Asus 6Z (known as the Asus Zenfone 6 in other countries) is only likely to increase its share.
Counterpoint also says that the Xiaomi Redmi 6A was the best-selling device in Q1 2019 in India. Click here to read the full report.
