CyberGhost VPN: Who is it good for?
CyberGhost VPN is an excellent service for people who:
- Desire privacy and security while using the internet
- Want to bypass censorship and access any resource available on the internet, globally
- Need a VPN service that does not keep logs of their web browsing activities
Pros and cons
CyberGhost VPN has many strengths:
Where To Buy
- It offers stable VPN connections
- It has a mode for unblocking streaming services
- It is easy to use on all PCs and devices
- Includes advanced options for automatization
- Extra features that are not present in other VPN services, such as the WiFi protection module, data compression, and an ad-blocking feature
- VPN apps that work on almost any type of device and operating system
- It does not keep logs of your activity
- It can be used on wireless routers to protect your entire network
There are some downsides to CyberGhost as well:
- It does not offer any free plans, as it used to in the past
- If you have a fast internet connection (200 Mbps or higher), you may notice a high negative impact on your connection’s speed
CyberGhost is well-known in the world of cybersecurity for being a reliable and fast VPN service. Both the Windows app and the Android/iOS apps come with clean and simple user interfaces. CyberGhost VPN also includes a series of additional features, like protection from harmful websites, the blocking of ads and online tracking. These features are a welcome bonus for a VPN service. Besides being secure, CyberGhost also offers stable VPN connections that do not slow you down while using your smartphone or tablet. The only significant drops in internet speed that we noticed were on Windows, where we had a 1 Gbps internet connection. If your internet connection is below 500 Mbps, CyberGhost’s impact on your speed should be less noticeable than in our case. All in all, CyberGhost VPN is an excellent service, and we recommend it to everyone willing to invest in their privacy.
Downloading and installing CyberGhost VPN on Windows, Android, and iOS
Downloading and installing CyberGhost is easy on Windows, as well as on Android or iOS devices. In Windows, you have to download a small executable file, launch it and go through the installation wizard. There is only one crucial moment during the installation: you are asked if you want to install a virtual network adapter called TAP-Windows Provider V9 Network adapters. Choose the Install option, as it is required for CyberGhost to function.
On Android devices, you have to use the Play Store to find and download CyberGhost VPN. The app works on any smartphone or tablet that runs Android 4.4 and higher. When you run it, make sure that you permit it to create VPN connections. Otherwise, it cannot work.
CyberGhost VPN also offers an app for iOS which you can use on your iPhone or iPad. You can get it from the App Store, following this link: CyberGhost VPN. It works on any iPhone, iWatch, iPad, iPad Pro, or iPod touch, that runs iOS 9.3 and higher. After downloading, installing and launching the app, CyberGhost asks you to allow it to launch VPN connections on your device. Just like on Windows or Android, you have to give it this permission. Otherwise, it does not work.
Our first impressions of CyberGhost VPN are positive. Downloading and installing its apps is a straightforward process, both in Windows, Android and iOS.
Using CyberGhost VPN for Windows
Upon launching the CyberGhost app, you are greeted by its main window. You see the six VPN profiles that the app offers. Also, you can use the links on the top of the app window to log in or log out, access your account online, ask for support and change CyberGhost’s settings.
The profiles connect to the same VPN service, but they are designed to meet different use cases. You do not need to search for fitting servers and prepare the right surroundings by adapting settings. If you want a safe, secure and anonymous web browsing experience, you should be fine with any of the profiles, but it is preferable always to launch the profile most adequate to your needs:
- Surf Anonymously: Anonymizes you on the internet and provides increased privacy
- Unblock Streaming: Ensures that you can use streaming services that are unavailable in many countries, no matter where you are
- Protect Wi-Fi: Highly recommended when using open WiFi networks, this profile is the same as the Surf Anonymously but also comes with automatic WiFi detection, so a secure VPN tunnel is established as soon as you enter a hotspot that you have visited before
- Torrent Anonymously: When activating this profile, the most suitable P2P-compatible VPN server is chosen, ensuring secure and anonymous downloads.
- Unblock Basic Websites: Tailored mostly for countries where internet access is restricted or censored, this profile allows you to access publicly available, popular web services that might be unavailable in your region.
- Choose My Server: This is not an automatic profile, as it lets you choose any country and server from CyberGhost’s network.
Whenever you choose an automatic profile, you can also enable or disable extra features like the blocking of malicious websites, the blocking of ads and so on.
Once a connection is established to a VPN server, you see information about the server, your current IP address (replaced by CyberGhost) and connection time. To close the VPN connection, press the Stop button.
When you activate the Unblock Streaming or Unblock Basic Websites profiles, you can choose from a list of web services that you want to unblock, and your default browser opens with the unblocked service.
If you want to connect to a server from a specific country, you need to launch the Choose My Server profile. Here you can choose any of the 59 available countries, and even a server from a specific city. For instance, you can choose to connect to a CyberGhost server from San Francisco, Phoenix, New York, Chicago, etc.
In this list, you can already see whether a server allows P2P traffic (torrenting), how loaded it is and how fast it responds (ping). You can also mark your favorite servers with a star, and choose from the emptiest, most full or fastest servers.
The interface of CyberGhost VPN for Windows uses connection profiles that allow you to have the best VPN experience, based on your specific needs. This concept offers a friendly user experience.
Using CyberGhost VPN for mobile devices (Android and iOS)
The CyberGhost VPN app for Android is similar to the one for Windows. It offers four different VPN connection profiles, which you can see and select by swiping on the screen: Wi-Fi Auto-Protect, Secured Streaming, Surf Anonymously, and Choose My Server.
The VPN profiles available in the Android app work just like the ones in the CyberGhost VPN Windows app. The only difference is that they are fewer: there is no VPN profile for torrenting and for unlocking basic websites. However, these are not profiles that you would need on an Android-powered device.
On iOS, the CyberGhost VPN app is even more straightforward: all you have to do to connect to a VPN is to tap the ON button. Then, a VPN connection to the Best Location chosen by CyberGhost is immediately established.
Both the Android and the iOS apps let you connect to a particular VPN server manually.
The CyberGhost VPN apps for Android and iOS are different, but they both look and work well. Their user interfaces are easy to understand and use.
CyberGhosts VPN’s advanced features
The user interfaces offered by CyberGhost VPN for Windows, Android, and iOS, are perfect for beginners and non-experienced users. However, should you want to access some more advanced settings, all you have to do is to access the Settings.
The Settings let you configure various things related to how CyberGhost works on your device. In Windows, for instance, you can change things like the user interface language, whether the service is launched at the Windows startup or whether you prefer CyberGhost to establish a VPN connection each time you start it, automatically.
The Windows app also lets you set up a list of sites or IP addresses for which the VPN service is disabled, or configure a proxy server. There is also an App Protection module found only on Windows, in which you can set up a list of apps that are automatically protected by CyberGhost. This means that whenever such a protected application is launched, a set CyberGhost profile is activated.
Wi-Fi Auto-Protect is a feature found both in Windows, but also in Android and iOS. It lets you automatically start a VPN connection whenever you connect to wireless networks. It is a useful feature that can enhance your safety when you are mobile and using your laptop, tablet or smartphone.
The CyberGhost VPN app for Windows offers advanced settings that let you configure its behavior in a detailed manner and thus enable an additional layer of security. Although the Android and iOS apps do not include so many advanced options, they also let you configure a few advanced settings like whether to automatically establish VPN connections when you are connected to wireless networks.

How fast is CyberGhost on Windows?
When using a VPN service like CyberGhost, you are safer on the internet, and your privacy is protected. However, connecting through VPN also means that you must sacrifice some speed, as there is another server involved. You are not directly connected to the internet. To check how much CyberGhost VPN affects our internet connection speed, we ran a couple of tests using the popular Speedtest.net service.
We used our internet connection on a desktop computer, connected to our Internet Service Provider. Then, we ran SpeedTest on servers in Romania (our home country), Germany (another country on the same continent), and the USA (a different country on a different continent). We wrote down the results. Then, we turned on Cyberghost using VPN servers in Romania, Germany, and the USA. We ran the same SpeedTest to see the speed we had with CyberGhost turned on. Take a look at the table below, to get a picture of the impact CyberGhost has on the speed of your internet connection.
No matter what server we use, download and upload speeds drop when connected to a VPN service: this is normal, as we are no longer connected directly to the internet, but have another server in the middle. However, it looks like the most significant speed drop is in our own country. The reason is the high internet speed that we have – up to 1 Gbps. CyberGhost VPN’s servers probably are not calibrated for such high speeds. The CyberGhost VPN network seems to have a maximum speed of up to 160 Mbps. For most users, this is enough.
How fast is CyberGhost on mobile devices (Android and iOS)?
To get an idea of how much the CyberGhost VPN app affects our internet speed on mobile devices, we also ran a few benchmarks using Speedtest.net on a Huawei P10 lite and an iPhone SE. Both smartphones were connected to a wireless network with good coverage.
We ran SpeedTest while connected to WiFi and with CyberGhost turned off, using servers from, Romania, Germany, and the USA. We noted the results. Then, we turned on CyberGhost and connected to VPN servers from Romania, Germany, and the USA. We then ran SpeedTest using servers from the same countries. Here is our speed comparison. As you can see, the decrease in speed is a lot smaller when using Android smartphones or tablets.
We then made the same measurements on our iPhone SE, on the same WiFi network, with CyberGhost turned off, and then with it turned on. You see a similar picture, with similar numbers.
Where To Buy
When using a mobile device with Android and iOS, CyberGhost has a small negative impact on the speed of your internet connection.
