Roughly six months ago I gleefully fell down the Linux rabbit hole and haven’t looked back. While doing so has positively affected both my personal and professional life, I’ve found myself stuck inside something I’ll call the “Ubuntu Comfort Bubble.” Ubuntu 18.04 is a fantastic operating system, and it was my doorway into desktop Linux. I’m constantly “distro-hopping” to discover what’s new and unique among the huge number of quality distributions out there, but those adventures are far too brief. So I’m challenging myself — and you — to the elementary OS Challenge!
The basic premise of the elementary OS Challenge is simple: ditch Windows, macOS or your current Linux OS of choice and exclusively use elementary OS 5 Juno as your daily driver for two weeks. Explore the curated AppCenter and the bundled software to get all of your working and playing done. For email, for music, for coding, for gaming, for whatever.
We’ll be taking this journey together, which hopefully means a two-way conversation to discuss the successes, discoveries, questions and potential stumbling blocks we encounter along the way.
Daily Challenge Content
Since we’ll be on this road together, I’ll be posting a bunch of content here to capture my ongoing experiences with the challenge. One day may see a stream-of-consciousness journal, other days I’ll be publishing short guides, software spotlights, interviews with elementary OS app developers and team members, and my own discoveries and hurdles (if any).
Whether you’re an elementary OS virgin or have been around since the Jupiter days, I hope you’ll check in and see how the challenge is progressing!
To better serve the idea of taking the challenge simultaneously, I’ve created this Telegram channel. There we can support each other, learn some new tricks from each other, make some new friends, toss out questions or answers and just generally kick some ass.
If you’re already an elementary OS veteran, feel free to lurk and laugh at us — or lend a helping hand.
Get elementary OS 5 Juno
Elementary OS is available at https://elementary.io as a “pay what you want” operating system. That amount can of course be zero, but if you appreciate the work that the elementary OS team is doing, you can always come back and donate or support them via their merch store.
Final Thoughts And The Green Light
The elementary OS Challenge is what I’ll call a community experiment. My hope is that if it resonates, this may be something I replicate for other Linux distributions. Why? To shine a light on all corners of the Linux desktop world, but to do it genuinely and right beside the community. Along the way perhaps someone will find their “forever distro” or even be inspired to make the switch to Linux full time.
At the very least, let’s all have some fun diving even deeper down this wonderful rabbit hole! Ok? Let’s do this! See you on the other side. . .
