Google Goggles officially ends with final app update

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Google Lens

  • Google Goggles — the precursor to Google Lens — just got an update after over three years of dormancy.
  • The update simply provides a splash screen to encourage users to download Google Lens instead.
  • This update signifies the official end of Google Goggles.

Google launched Google Goggles in 2009, and then finally released a stable version in 2014. But since 2015 the app has been mostly dormant without any support or updates from the big G.

Now, today, the first update to Google Goggles just hit after over three years of nothing, via Android Central. However, the update is simply a splash screen that encourages users to download Google Lens instead.

See for yourself below:

While it’s been pretty well-known for the past few years that Google Goggles was over, now it’s totally official.

Google Goggles was the precursor to Google Lens. Like Lens, Goggles allowed you to use your camera to learn about real-life items. However, the big difference between Goggles and Lens is that Lens uses artificial intelligence via Google Assistant, whereas Goggles was essentially a fancy barcode scanner and Google Search tool.

Google launched Lens in 2017 and since then has pushed that as its real-world exploration app-of-choice.

If you for some reason still have Google Goggles, it’s time to let it go. Click the button below to install Google Lens on your compatible Android device.
