Fitbit sell over 1 million Versa smartwatches in just under two months

  • Fitbit has shipped more than 1 million Versa smartwatches in less than two months.
  • This is in contrast to the first Fitbit smartwatch, the Ionic, which the company said did not reach sales targets.
  • The Versa is around $100 cheaper than the Ionic and has a new — some would say better — design.

Fitbit has announced that it has shipped more than one million Fitbit Versa smartwatches since the device became available on April 16. It also said that over 2.4 million users have already used the female health tracking feature that the company introduced last month.

Both the new watch and the new feature appear to be part of an attempt by the company to help make the device appeal to a larger audience. In a statement, the company said: “With Fitbit Versa, we are delivering on our promise to offer a true mass appeal smartwatch with engaging new features.”

This is quite a turnaround for the company whose first smartwatch, the Ionic, did not appear to do quite so well upon release. While Fitbit didn’t unveil sales numbers for the device, it did say that the Ionic failed to meet the sales targets set by the company.

Without official sales numbers it is hard to make an accurate comparison of the two watches, but the fact that Fitbit released a statement about Versa’s market performance so far suggests that the company is far happier with how it is performing.

The Fitbit Versa refined the experience provided by the Ionic in a number of ways. It changed up the design quite drastically, making it smaller and thinner, but with a larger display. Additionally, Versa watches were powered by Fitbit OS 2.0 upon release, although this has since been rolled out to existing Ionic watches too.

Perhaps the most crucial thing Fitbit did was reduce the price by $100. While this means that users no longer have GPS, it did allow the company to significantly undercut watches from established smartwatch companies like Samsung and Apple.
