Best phones under £300:

Editor’s note: We’ll be updating this list of the best phones under £300 regularly as new mid-range devices launch.

1. Xiaomi Mi 9T

Xiaomi Mi 9T in hand

We’re cheating a little by including the Xiaomi Mi 9T here, as it’s not officially available through Xiaomi’s U.K. channels. However, the Chinese brand’s Mi 9 spin-off — dubbed the Xiaomi K20 in India — is just too good a phone at such a ridiculously low price to not to put it on the list.

Android Authority‘s Ryan-Thomas Shaw crowned it his favorite mid-range smartphone of all-time, and it’s not hard to see why. Blazing performance, a highly versatile rear triple-lens camera, stunning design, and a gorgeous, bezel-less AMOLED display are just a few of the amazing features that belie the phone’s cost price.

The only minor gripe you can really have with the Mi 9T is Xiaomi’s muddled MIUI software skin, but even that has improved over previous Xiaomi phones. This phone basically has it all.

While it should only be a matter of time before we see the Mi 9T officially launch in the U.K., you can pick up the global version at various international retailers (including Amazon) for €329. That’s technically £5 over the £300 mark when converted, but it’s worth the tiny bit extra.

If you’re not keen on importing but want a great Xiaomi-made handset, the Pocophone F1 is still one of the best value phones in recent memory.

Xiaomi Mi 9T specs:

  • Display: 6.39-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 730
  • RAM: 6GB
  • Storage: 64/128GB
  • Rear cameras: 48, 8, and 13MP
  • Front camera: 20MP
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9 Pie

2. Samsung Galaxy A50

Samsung Galaxy A50 front display - best phones under £300

Samsung has a spotty record in the budget phone sector, but its recent overhaul of the A series has led to some of the South Korean giant’s best affordable phones ever made. Case in point: the Samsung Galaxy A50.

Rocking a rainbow-like, gradient design and outfitted with three rear cameras, the Galaxy A50 combines style and features in the way you’d expect from any Samsung phone. It may not have the most powerful chipset on the market, but the Exynos 9610 is more than capable of handling everyday use and even 3D gaming.

The A50 is one of Samsung’s best ever mid-range phones.

The 6.4-inch AMOLED display is stunning and Samsung’s One UI software offers a clean, uncluttered take on Android.

The Galaxy A50 is priced at £309 as standard, but regularly falls below that in frequent sales from a variety of retailers both online and on the high street.

Samsung Galaxy A50 specs:

  • Display: 6.4-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Exynos 9610
  • RAM: 4/6GB
  • Storage: 64/128GB
  • Cameras: 25, 8, and 5MP
  • Front camera: 25MP
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

3. Honor 20 Lite

Honor 20 Lite rear - best cheap phones uk

There are plenty of great Honor phones available in the U.K., but the Honor 20 Lite is the best you can get on a low budget. It may be cheap and it’s not on par with the Honor 20 or Honor 20 Pro, but the Huawei sub-brand hasn’t skimped on features for the Lite model.

That’s especially true in the camera department, where Honor has included a 24MP primary sensor, an 8MP wide-angle lens, and a depth sensor for bokeh-style shots. There’s also a microSD slot and a headphone jack.

The Kirin 710 won’t be topping any benchmarks and the lack of USB-C (regular USB 2.0 here) is a bummer, but you can’t argue with great value.

Honor 20 Lite specs:

  • Display: 6.21-inch, 2340 x 1080p, 415ppi
  • SoC: Kirin 710
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Storage: 128GB
  • Cameras: 24MP, 8MP, 2MP
  • Front camera: 32MP
  • Battery: 3,400mAh
  • Software: Android 9 Pie

4. Motorola One Vision

Motorola One Vision - best phones under £300

Motorola has a reputation for delivering quality mid-range phones thanks to its G series, but its best phone under £300 right now is the Motorola One Vision.

The One Vision’s two hallmark features are its elongated 21:9 aspect ratio display and dual camera. The latter is the real star of the show, as the 48MP main shooter produces some amazing results considering the phone’s price tag.

The Samsung-made Exynos 9609 also performs surprisingly well and the Android One software is the most pure OS experience outside of buying a Google Pixel phone.

The battery life is a bit of a letdown and the punch hole is far too large, but the Motorola One Vision is a fun, experimental phone for a great price.

Motorola One Vision specs:

  • Display: 6.3-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Exynos 9609
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Storage: 128GB
  • Rear camera: 48MP and 5MP
  • Front camera: 25MP
  • Battery: 3,500mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

5. Nokia 8.1

Nokia 8.1 on a table

Fancy an Android One phone but don’t want the One Vision’s tall display? HMD Global has you covered with the excellent Nokia 8.1.

Initially priced closer to £400, the Nokia 8.1 has dropped to below £300 recently and is still one of the best phones in Nokia’s Android line-up.

Aside from the outdated wide-notch design, there’s not much to grumble at with the Nokia 8.1. The up-to-date software, classy design, and solid performance make this a great all-rounder. The dual camera isn’t the best on this list, but it’s still competent enough for getting those all-important Instagram snaps.

Nokia 8.1 specs:

  • Display: 6.18-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 710
  • RAM: 4/6GB
  • Storage: 64/128GB
  • Rear camera: 12MP and 13MP
  • Front camera: 20MP
  • Battery: 3,500mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

6. Sony Xperia 10

Sony Xperia 10 - phone under £300

The Sony Xperia 10 is another tall phone with a 21:9 aspect ratio display and one of Sony’s better mid-range phones, which have traditionally been a little hit-and-miss.

As well as the “super widescreen” display, the Xperia 10 also comes with a dual-lens camera, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC.

The Xperia 10 is priced a little high based on the specs, but it’s easily the best option for music lovers as the audio hardware and software suite is among the best you can get on a budget.

Sony Xperia 10 specs:

  • Display: 6-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 630
  • RAM: 3GB
  • Storage: 64GB
  • Rear cameras: 13 and 5MP
  • Front camera: 8MP
  • Battery: 2,870mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie
