A local network that does not use DHCP is required to assign IP addresses to each computer manually. If the DHCP is installed on local network then each computer will be connected to the network that will get an IP address automatically from the DHCP server.

1. IP Least Request Stage

At the first stage of the DHCP server, this is the stage where a client computer on the network requests an IP Address that is already available on the DHCP Server.

Initially, the first time the client computer is connected in a network the client computer will request an IP address on the available DHCP server.

2. IP Least Offer Stage

In this second stage, the IP Least Offer stage. Where in this second stage DHCP server hears broadcat delivered by new clients connected to the network earlier. And then the DHCP server will provide an offer on the client computer that is an IP Address

3. IP Lease Selection Stage

In this third stage it is often called the IP Lease Selection stage. Because after being given an IP Address offer from the DHCP Server, the client computer that requested it previously also agreed to the offer that was given by the DHCP server.

And then the client computer will give a message to the DHCP server that contains a request that the DHCP server lends one of the IP Addresses that have been available previously in the DHCP-pool it has. DHCP-pool is an IP rancge that can be used by a host connected to it.

4. IP Least Acknowledge Stage

And the last is the fourth stage of how the DHCP server works, at this stage it is named the IP Least Acknowledge stage. This last stage is that the DHCP server will respond to messages from the client computer by sending an acknowledgment packet containing the IP Address with other information that will be needed.

And then after giving the IP Address to the client computer, the DHCP server will update the contents of the dtabase they already have. And while the client will initialize an activity by binding the IP address number that has been given previously and the client computer can operate on the network.

For you to better understand how it works, when a computer from the client computer is connected with a network, the computer will also request an IP from the DHCP server. The DHCP server will answer by providing information related to the IP Address to the client computer.

Then after lending the IP Address, the DHCP server will eliminate the IP in the list of pools that it already has. And then it will indicate that the IP has been lent to one of the client computers.

But if in the IP pool list there are no more IP addresses still available, the client computer will not get an IP address from the DHCP server. That way, the client computer will never be able to connect to the network.

Generally lending the IP address has a certain amount of time, usually according to the plan set by a network administrator. So, after a certain period of time, the use of an IP address on the client computer has been declared complete.

And if the client computer does not re-request, then the IP address will be returned to the DHCP server that has lent it. DHCP cerver can lend the IP address to other client computers that need it.
